Philanthropy in Action: Focus on Scholarships 2

In our second Focus on Scholarships story, we highlight another UWCSEA scholar who is using their educational experience to transform the lives of others.

Nhung Le ’12 joined the College in 2010 on a full two-year IB Diploma Scholarship. Originally from rural Vietnam, she had never imagined that one day she would be working at a boutique management consulting firm in the US. However, after graduating UWCSEA in 2012 she received a further scholarship to study Mathematics and Economics at Wellesley College in Boston, and from there, a world of opportunity opened up to her.

With the UWC values at her side and her genuine desire to pave the way for others to follow in her footsteps, she co-founded MaSSP – a math and summer camp that provides enriching learning opportunities for Vietnamese students from underprivileged backgrounds.

Every year, Nhung works with MaSSP to arrange for PhD students from MIT, the University of Chicago, Princeton University and Columbia University to travel to Vietnam to lead educational summer camps for students from underprivileged backgrounds. The aim is to encourage and help more young people learn, understand, and apply math, science and research skills so that they can create a better future for themselves and for Vietnam.

“It warms my heart daily to think about the UWC values and the opportunities which helped me become a better person. These thoughts encourage me to work harder, share my knowledge and skills, and commit myself to bringing equal opportunities to all. I am deeply thankful for those who supported me, and my teachers and friends at UWCSEA.”
