On Tuesday 20th of February, over 140 members from the UWCSEA donor community came together to celebrate the impact of giving to the College.
Held in the lush surroundings of Hort Park, the annual Donor Celebration event showcased a range of programmes that gifts have made possible such as Solar for Dover, Adopt a Tree, the Rainforest Restoration Project and IDEAS Hub. With over 70 students (including members of our scholar and boarding community) in attendance, the evening was a fantastic opportunity to engage with those currently living and learning the UWC values.
Chris Edwards, Head of College and Anna Lord, Chair of the Board, both offered their sincere thanks for the generosity and support of the community and provided an overview on the important role philanthropy plays in the development of UWCSEA and the UWC Movement as a whole.
The highlight of the evening was a speech by two of our current scholars – Mey, Class of 2018 from Cambodia and Valentin, Class of 2018 from Kazakhstan. Together they gave an insight into the remarkable UWC educational experience.
“Before UWCSEA, I used to think learning was only about reading the textbooks and getting a good grade in exams, but the hands-on experiences such as the field trips and expedition trips to various countries apart from my own, really opened my eyes and mind to have a bigger perspective. I learned to understand and have more respect for the differences in people and their cultures.” – Mey
Since 2008, UWCSEA has received over S$23 million in gifts and pledges from the College community. Gifts support the UWC Scholarship Programme, sustainable development initiatives and teaching and learning programmes. For more information take a look at our 2016/2017 Impact of Giving report.
The Donor Celebration event has been held annually for the past five years with support from the Facilities Team, Sodexo and the UWCSEA Foundation’s Parent Ambassadors.
Collective giving through the UWCSEA Foundation continues to advance the vital UWC mission and enrich the transformational UWCSEA learning experience, in the classroom and beyond. Make a gift today.
